Transition equals Opportunities

Transition equals Opportunities

Aug 2015

I had been preparing for this adventure for the last year and finally the morning had arrived. The house, cars and business were sold and all our belongings were at the front door in 10 suitcases, ready to leave and start a new life in a different country. Lift-off.

As I looked below, there was the island I had called home for the last 15 years, slowly getting smaller. It was really happening. We had left. Transition just became real. Was I really ready for the next season?

Before moving back to Australia I gave myself time to prepare for this transition. I knew that it wouldn’t be easy, moving my wife and 3 kids, selling my business and leaving close friends and a familiar network of colleagues, but I knew this and was willing to walk the journey. Reflecting on the things I had accomplished in my last 2 businesses, the connections I had made, the life lessons learn’t, I was not leaving them, but taking them with me to my next season of life. As a leader of my family and of the businesses I ran, I wanted to make sure that I would be prepared and have the strategic insight for the next season.

Major life transitions, moving country, changing jobs, getting promoted to a new position can be daunting, but if prepared in the right way with the right support around you, it can be the most exciting journey and experience.

Being in transition is a wonderful opportunity to grow. Here are some keys for success.

  1. Remind yourself of who you are. As an empowered leader, it’s important to know your strengths and focus on these things first. Going into the new season with confidence will help you have the right attitude when testing situations arise.
  2. Find the areas you want to up-skill in. Take time to grow and allow yourself to explore new ideas. When you know who you are, you will start to hone in on areas that need attention.
  3. Surround yourself with people who support and believe in you. Iron sharpen’s iron, so one person sharpens another. Instead of rushing into your next position, take the time to use strategic planning and cultivate your network with influences.

At Joseph Consulting, we encourage leaders to find their strengths and develop them so they can impact their life and business. Please call Joseph Consulting today to see if we can help you on your journey.
